Our Olive Story
Paul Riley who resides in the beautiful Riebeek Valley in the Western Cape, has been picking and bottling olives for around 15 yrs as a hobby and business.
Our name “Lost Olive co” came from the fact that we pick olives from many different farms, mainly those where the olives are left on the trees and end up on the ground to rot. This is mainly due to the exorbitant labour cost to pick these small gems. These olives had little chance of ending up in your olive oil or on your table, hence, Lost Olives. We purchase or trade for these little guys. We use many different olives but mainly Mission and Frantoio.

2022 Olive Season Summary
This year was a good year for us, having picked around 100 tons of olives mostly for oil but also for table olives, mainly Mission and Frantoio olives.
2023 Olive Season Summary
2023 was a bad year, we didn’t even pick.
2024 Olive Season Summary
The 2024 season was okay but still not great. We managed to do just over 4000 liters.

FAQ
Interview With Paul Riley
Is this your main job description?
No. Olives have been a personal passion for most of my life. I’m in the motor industry and own a Subaru specialist workshop for over 20yrs.
I am personally present when we harvest which is all done by hand, so I know where all our olives come from.
Where do your olives come from?
Mostly from the Riebeek Valley in the Western Cape but also from the Paardeberg, between Wellington and Malmesbury.
Do you blend with other oils?
No. That’s a sin. We only sell cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. Our olives are washed and pressed with-in a 12-24 hour period.
How do local olive compare with imported Olives?
Our local South African Olives are of world class standard and in many cases better. The problem is we have more of a demand than we can supply, so need imported oil. The problem is when imported the consumer does not always realis that we done always get the 1st grade best quality wen it comes to imported oils. So try local.
Why do you sell some oils in clear plastic containers?
This is only for the purpose of transportation. These are food grade plastic bottles and serve the purpose of getting your olive oil to your favourite bottles at home. Oil needs to be ideally stored in a dark bottle in a cool dark place. Try an old wine bottle.
There is also a glass shortage and glass bottles are now expensive.
